Zimbabwe snatch last ball thriller to take 1-0 lead: Digicel Match Report

Zimbabwe held their nerve to steal an enthralling last ball thriller and win by two runs against West Indies in the First Digicel ODI at the Guyana National Stadium. They have shocked the Windies and taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match Digicel Series.

With 15 runs needed from the final over with Nikita Miller on strike, the Jamaican smashed a six from the first ball and followed up with a four to leave five runs to get from four deliveries. He took a single next ball and Dwayne Smith was on strike. Smith then essayed a wild and mighty blow, missed and was bowled. After the ill-advised shot, four runs were then required from two balls.

Finance (5)What was the former Mutual Bank in Barbados became Butterfield Bank in the late 90’s, not many folk realised immediately that it was the franchise of a Bermuda based fiscal service. Like the erstwhile Shakey’s restaurant (which, like MacDonald’s here  in Barbados, also did not last too long), this was a branch organisation which managed to slip under the radar of ‘Franchise Watchdogs of Barbados,’ i.e. the Unions and local counterparts.

Well, according to the Bermuda Sun, as one President opts for retirement and another assumes the mantle of leading the group, it appears to be trouble in Paradise as a loss of hundreds of millions is recorded and seeks a bailout close to half a billion dollars from abroad, and one of First Caribbean International’s parent companies is part of the stimulus initiative;-

Inniss gives synopsis of Barbados’ medical assistance to Haiti

GIVING a synopsis of Barbados’ medical response to Haiti, Minister of Health Donville Inniss says that the assistance rendered cannot be easily quantified.

He was speaking in the Lower House yesterday where he noted that assistance to Haiti has come in the form of not only cash but human resources, materials and moral support. To this end, he commended the health care workers whom from “day one” volunteered their services to the earthquake-ravaged country.

Just last weekend, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet was in Haiti, a stop over on her way to Mexico’s Unity Summit with the Group of Rio and Caricom. The island was hit by a horrific earthquake of magnitude-7.0 on January 12 this year, causing immense devastation and death. Some 300,000 people are estimated to have died in Haiti from the earthquake. She met with Haiti’s President, Rene Preval, in that nation’s capital Port au Prince, as well as with women’s organisations in the capital.

Govt denies banning Jamaican artiste

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Grenada government yesterday denied it had banned Jamaican dancehall artiste, Clifford Smith, popularly known as “Mr. Vegas” from performing last Saturday, insisting that show promoters should follow the proper procedures laid down for obtaining the necessary work permits.
