UWI Statement – Observing the Passing of Professor Rex Nettleford of the Mona Campus

Other tributes are expected from several Caribbean leaders and others impacted by Nettleford’s work and life. His body is to be flown back to Jamaica for burial.

The Guild Council 2009/10 regrets to inform you of the passing of Professor Rex Nettleford. Professor Nettleford was Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies and suffered a heart attack while on University business in Washington, D.C. on January 27th, 2010.

The President and the Guild Council wishes to extend our deepest sympathy to the family, colleagues and friends of Professor Nettleford. The President, Mr. Carl Padmore, who is currently at Mona Campus, Jamaica attending University meetings is also acting as an arm of support for the colleagues of Professor Nettleford at Mona Campus.

Major progress has been made in restoring the Digicel network in Haiti. With more than twice the number of cell sites of its nearest competitor, over 92% of them are now fully operational and the company has significantly increased its international circuits to support the major increase in international traffic into and out of the country.
